…And right now, we are looking for a Database Ops Engineer at an exciting time in Saga’s history. As a Group, Saga is taking to the seas in our brand new, luxury cruise ships, leading the market with innovative insurance and financial products.   

You will be involved in customer data management which can include complex algorithms, which you will also be involved in database design, development, testing, performance tuning and support for all aspects of the Production, UAT and Development Environments. Working within a software development team, attending planning sessions, stand ups, reviews, and involved with multiple project stakeholders to help shape the future development of the systems. 

You will bring a solid understanding of end-to-end data processing (ETL, DTS, SSIS) and be a strong communicator by having a high level of technical aptitude.

Main Responsibilities

As a Database Ops Engineer your top 5 responsibilities are: 

  • Analysing, maintaining and optimising Saga’s customer databases. 

  • Performance tuning - a deep understanding of index, query, and table performance and how to resolve issues. 

  • Working collaboratively with other technology professionals to support technology programmes, projects and workstreams. 

  • Identification of low value activity and process improvements. Encouraging automation and coordination with Development and DevOps teams. 

  • Developing relationships with internal resources and third parties to aid incident and issue resolution. 

The Ideal Candidate

  • Communication skills.  

  • Knowledge of technologies relevant to area.  

  • Agile development methodologies.  

  • An eye for detail and identifying problems.  

  • Risk and Incident management.  

  • Best in class analysis skills, with the ability to understand business requirements and translate them into solutions.  

  • Excellent knowledge of logical and physical data models, metadata definitions and models, queries and reports, processes, and maintenance procedures.  

  • Expertise in data engineering with demonstratable experience in design, development, testing of database solutions and experience with data lake and warehousing tools and techniques. Including a focus on performance, scalability, security considerations and operation within a regulatory framework.  

  • Performance tuning - a deep understanding of index, query, and table performance and how to resolve issues.  

  • In depth understanding of Microsoft SQL Server (to ver.  SQL Server 2019) Database administration and maintenance of production systems.  

  • Experience building, using Microsoft SSIS / ETL and Visual Studio. 

  • Self-motivation and the ability to work remotely under their own initiative within a collaborative team environment.  

  • Authoring of technical documentation and the provision of support, training and knowledge transfer to Developers, Business Clients, and IT Support Staff.  

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills via phone, email, and video conferencing.  

  • Industry experience with exposure to Agile software engineering and Change Management best practices. 

  • Good education background ideally to a degree level.   

  • Experience in database operations or similar experience.  

  • Experience of Microsoft Azure is preferred.  

  • Agile and scrum experience.  

  • Experience of Dynatrace is preferred but is not essential.
